Dear All,
It is with a sense of deep sadness and shock
that we must announce the sudden passing away of another of
the Fauna Foundation's chimpanzee residents.
Donna Rae, died at approximately 9.30 am today,
Monday March 14th. The exact cause of her death is not clear
at this time.
All of her chimpanzee family were given the
opportunity to see Donna Rae's body, after she had passed
away, and to bid farewell.
Donna Rae's presence touched the heart and soul
of everyone at Fauna and all that had been privileged to meet
her. She will be missed tremendously by all of her family
at Fauna, both non-human and human.
Donna Rae died at the young age of 39 years.
Donna, we love you.
Sadly,
All at Fauna

Donna Rae was born in captivity and used to
entertain children at private parties, where she would ride
a bicycle and play the guitar. When she was 12 years old she
was taken by her owner and led by the hand into a cage at
a research facility. At the lab Donna Rae was infected with
hepatitis and HIV. Once retired at our sanctuary, Donna Rae
formed close friendships with Sue
Ellen and Chance,
and was especially close to Annie.
Donna Rae was famous for her uncanny ability to know when
it's 3:00 p.m. and time for afternoon tea or juice. At this
exact time she would move into position and bang an empty
cup or bottle on the wall until she got her desired beverage!
